Ty Wiliams, an old friend of Madre, is a mixed media artist/surfer based between rural Maine and St. Augustine, Florida (or wherever in the world he can find a wall to paint or good waves to surf). His Hockney/Matese style of art has developed and morphed throughout his travels and is expressed through a variety of mediums ranging from simple cheeky sketches to large-scale wall murals and swimming pools. In these times, Ty too is on lockdown and has made us a playlist to pass the time. Have a listen, read through his interview, and let the tunes transport you to another place.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
My name is Ty Williams and I’m from The northeast. Maine in particular I guess.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR ART?
I get jazzed over vintage illustrations, calypso records, whimsical simplistic writing, primitive art, trips to Japan, life on the ocean, surfing.
HOW HAVE YOU GOTTEN TO THE POINT YOU ARE NOW CREATIVELY?
I believe that I have been quite proficient in procrastination and highly ambitious in the support of leisurely activities …so I think that has lead to whatever this is now…
WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS IN MUSIC?
Reggae, dub to be specific, old roots music. That and jazz, bossa nova, etc. things that can be put on and “lived to”. I enjoy having music play that I don’t have to worry about.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR MADRE RADIO PLAYLIST?
Lately, I have been fantasizing about a good southwest road trip, something that leads to the ocean eventually…. and I suppose some mellow country tracks with the minimall cruisy sounds can take my mind there.
IF YOU WERE TO DRINK A GLASS OF MEZCAL WITH ANYONE LIVE OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
My answer to this would change given the day but I still feel like I would like to drink with Bill Murray.
